Countrywide Financial Corp.’s cutbacks were expected to affect the company’s operation in Chandler because some loan-origination personnel work at the 65-acre campus on Chandler Boulevard east of Loop 101. The company is Chandler’s fourth-largest employer, with about 2,300 workers in the city, as well as in leased space in Tempe. WASHINGTON - A record number of homeowners got an unpleasant notice in their mailboxes this spring that their mortgages were being foreclosed. The grim prospect is that thousands more of those notices will crop up in mailboxes in coming months as the steepest slump in housing in 16 years contributes to a widening mortgage crisis. In a sign that there still is potential for the Valley’s apartment-rental rates to climb, two investment firms have paid a combined $66 million for two complexes. New York City-based Abacus Capital Group LLC bought Renaissance at South Mountain apartments, 15251 S. 50th St. in Phoenix, for $37 million. The deal closed last week. In a separate deal that closed last month, Scottsdale-based PEM Real Estate Group paid $29.3 million for the Village at Gateway Pavilions complex, 1700 N. 103rd Ave. in Avondale. More…

WASHINGTON - A painful credit crunch is taking its worst toll on the already ailing housing market, while its impact on the rest of the economy so far seems limited, the Federal Reserve reported Wednesday.
