At full throttle, the intense thrill of driving the 1,001-horsepower Bugatti Veyron 16.4 Grand Sport alarms the senses into focusing on the road rushing past as you try to harness the car’s power with its equally capable agility.

Crashing this $2.3 million supercar loaner into a lake is not an option I care to explore as I blast down the twisting Bartlett Dam Road on a recent morning.  more…

Your guide to Valley events leading up to kickoff

You’ve known for years that the Super Bowl was returning to the Valley. But if you haven’t been paying attention, don’t fret.

Today, The Arizona Republic’s Super Bowl XLII team provides a crash course on what you can expect when the world’s largest and most lucrative sporting event descends on the Valley.

With less than a month until kickoff, we’ll let you in on which celebrities and broadcast personalities will be in town, where you can rub shoulders with them and how much you’d have to pay. You also might want to study our cheat sheet on where to catch Super Bowl block parties, concerts and events guaranteeing you a piece of the action.

The game is set for Feb. 3 at University of Phoenix Stadium in Glendale, but events span the Valley ranging from free family-friendly events to high-dollar exclusive parties and performances. When the big game comes to town, there’s something for everyone.

Building booms near Glendale sports venues

Zanjero Falls, cbd 101, Main Street, 91 Glendale. Most are still unfamiliar names to residents in Glendale and the Valley. But, they are some of the projects that aspire to reshape west Glendale from farmland to economic hub. More than a dozen restaurants and hotels race to open by February’s Super Bowl at Glendale’s University of Phoenix Stadium. Super Bowl panel walks fine ticket line

The local group helping to organize next year’s Super Bowl is walking a delicate line. As it tries to lure big-money sponsors, it’s also trying to retain control of its most precious asset: Super Bowl tickets. E-mails recently obtained by The Arizona Republic show that when the Arizona Office of Tourism pledged $750,000 to sponsor the Arizona Super Bowl Host Committee, the office was offered just four game tickets in return. That didn’t sit well with Margie Emmermann, the state agency’s director. She thought the cash contributions warranted more tickets.  More…

Grant helps Buckeye airport grow for Super Bowl traffic

Jerry Thiele wasn’t worried about the score of last year’s Super Bowl. When the festivities unfolded in Miami, he was keeping an eye on air traffic. As the airport manager of Buckeye Municipal Airport, he knew what happened in Florida airports as a result of the big game was a solid indicator of what to expect in Arizona come February. Thiele’s forethought has given Buckeye a chance to spruce up its airport with $1 million in improvements for the Feb. 3 Super Bowl. An Arizona Department of Transportation grant will expand the airport’s ramp by 85,000 square feet.  More…

Private reserve: Super Bowl organizers snapping up

The reserve of 18,000 hotel rooms and a calendar that has the FBR Open overlapping Super Bowl XLII will make it difficult, though not impossible, to get a room for that February weekend. Super Bowl XLII will be held Feb. 3, 2008, at the University of Phoenix Stadium in Glendale. The FBR Open, a popular stop on the PGA Tour, will be played at the Tournament Players Club in Scottsdale from Jan. 28 through Feb. 3. Glendale close to $80.7 mil ballpark deal

Glendale officials, in the final stretch, hope to knock home deals to make spring training with the Los Angeles Dodgers and Chicago White Sox a reality. The City Council tonight, in its last meeting before summer recess, is expected to finalize details to open an $80.7 million spring-training site in 2009. Dodgers owner Frank McCourt, who is in town as the Dodgers play the Diamondbacks, is expected to attend tonight’s council meeting. The agreements include a tax-revenue sharing plan with Phoenix because the ballpark is planned on 151 acres of Glendale-owned land in Phoenix at 107th Avenue and Camelback RoadMore…

Indoor golf center bets on heat to draw players

Derek Martinez, who plays his Xbox regularly, says playing indoor golf resonates with him. “As a gamer, I really like it,” Martinez said Thursday night at CrossWoods Indoor Golf Center in Gilbert. “It’s pretty realistic.” CrossWoods is the first center of its kind in Arizona, said Michael Rus, owner and general manager. The business opened in March, just before the time when Valley golf courses lower their prices as the temperatures rise. It is trying to gain an indoor foothold for a sport that has a 365-day outdoor season in the Valley.  More…

Surplus of courses, decline in play show signs of stabilizing

SCOTTSDALE - Stung by an oversupply of new courses and a decline in play, the golf industry is showing signs of stabilizing. Hodges Ward Elliott, a golf course brokerage that represented Scottsdale-based Troon Golf, reports an increase in golf real estate deals in the past two years. 5 firms in line to design ballpark

Five companies are being considered to design Glendale’s latest professional sports venue, a spring training stadium for the Los Angeles Dodgers and Chicago White Sox. City and team representatives will meet in the coming weeks to whittle the list to one. Then they will search for a construction manager.
