Builders coveting historic district

Increasing development pressure for high-rise towers in Phoenix’s historic Warehouse District has city planners rewriting the rules for building heights and preservation. Years of work to rejuvenate the heart of downtown Phoenix continues to pay off, and now developers have their eyes on land just south of the city center for skyscraping condominiums. The Warehouse District, roughly from Madison to Lincoln streets between Seventh Avenue and Seventh Street, is peppered with about 40 warehouses that once stored furniture, produce and other merchandise. Many other warehouses have been demolished over the years to make way for such things as a baseball stadium and a basketball arena.  More…

Housing site in Buckeye sold for $86 million

The people behind the state’s largest master-planned development increased their holdings in Buckeye’s Sun Valley by paying more than $86 million for the project next door. The principals of Douglas Ranch, a 35,000-acre project west of the White Tank Mountains, bought the 3,000-acre Trillium project for nearly $86.3 million in two transactions that closed last week, real estate records show.  More…

Phoenix’s land fight set for next round: desert preserve vs. dream-home plans

A half-mile south of the Carefree Highway, the pavement ends and Central Avenue turns into a rough dirt road through high Sonoran Desert. The views are long and lovely. In 2000, Sherry Harnish bought 5 acres just on the other side of the mountain, accessible only by a winding dirt road off “Central,” such as it is. She intended to build a dream house for her retirement.  More…

26-story condo in works for Tempe Town Lake

A Scottsdale developer announced Wednesday it hopes to begin construction of a 26-story condominium tower on the north shore of Tempe Town Lake early this year with sales opening in March. Developed by WestStone Communities, Onyx Tower would include 196 condos, ranging in price from the $300,000s to more than $1 million. The high rise — with its solid black glass walls — would sit near Rural Road and Loop 202.  More…

W. Valley housing boom to continue, economist says

While people should expect to see slower growth in 2007, the West Valley’s population and housing boom will continue through the coming decades, economist Elliott Pollack said. Pollack pointed out that 44 percent of the Valley’s population is expected to live in this region by 2020. Likewise, about 58 percent of the Valley’s housing units built are expected to be located in the West Valley in the next decade, he said.  More…
