Steven J. Hilton, chairman and chief executive of Meritage Home Corp., Arizona’s only publicly traded home builder, saw his total compensation drop by $1.2 million between 2005 and 2006. But his 2006 paycheck of $9.74 million still nets him a coveted spot as one of the best-paid executives in Arizona. The housing market is in the tank — as reflected by Meritage’s filings with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission, which show the builder’s net income plummeted 81 percent from first-quarter 2006 to first-quarter 2007.
