Swimming pools cool homes as well as owners

Swimming pools, long a key to summer survival for Arizonans, are now being tapped to cool homes as well.

Foreclosures still drive home sales in metro area

Phoenix-area home-resale activity in June reached a frenzied pace, rivaling the busiest period of the housing boom, but a high foreclosure rate had a major impact on those big numbers.

 

June sales of existing detached, single-family homes totaled 7,760 in Maricopa County, according to Arizona State University’s realty studies department, by far the highest number the Valley has seen since home prices began a precipitous decline in 2006.  more…

Some Biltmore condo buyers have 2nd thoughts

When Douglas and Sonia Bendt purchased their $1.6 million condo in a Biltmore Estates luxury development in 2007, they were ecstatic.

 

But after an ongoing battle with the developer over what residents say is mismanagement of homeowners association funds and residential property, the Bendts say they expected more from a development in such an esteemed location.  more…

Northeast Phoenix malls work to shrink high vacancy rates

Northeast Phoenix malls and shopping centers are experiencing some of the highest vacancy rates they’ve seen in years.

Although there have been some successes - most malls have welcomed new stores this year - the number of retailers leaving malls and shopping centers has affected business and customer confidence.   more…

Arizona’s stimulus funds going mostly unused

Arizona and other states have largely failed to spend stimulus money intended for low-income housing, in part because of delays in Washington, according to a government oversight report released Wednesday.

Through late June, Arizona’s 15 public-housing authorities had spent just 3 percent of $12 million in stimulus funds for modernizing living structures. It had plans in place to spend another 11 percent, the Government Accountability Office reported. The results were unimpressive in other states, too.  more…

Valley’s home sales up in June

Here are some more positive signs from metropolitan Phoenix’s housing market, which may not be recovering but doesn’t appear to be deteriorating any more.

Home sales climbed again in June to reach 9,614, according to the Information Market/Cromford Report survey. That’s an 11 percent increase from May’s home sales. June is the sixth straight month home sales have climbed in the Valley.  more…

Chandler high-rise back in developer’s hands

Like a cat with nine lives, developer Jeff Cline has resumed control of Elevation Chandler.

A legal technicality has deemed a June 15 trustee sale invalid.

A new trustee sale is set for Sept. 17, giving Cline more time to find a buyer for the 10.6-acre construction site south of Chandler Fashion Center.    more…
